Hints and Tips

  • DRAINS

Clogged drains prevention is one of the most important items on your DIY home maintenance list.  Kitchen drain seems to be the most frequent issue, because of the type of items typically poured down the kitchen drain.

Ask your Adams Plumbing and Heating plumber about safe biodegradable waste digesters.

In the event of a clogged drain, use a plunger or clean by removing the J-bend on the trap below the fixture.

  • WATER HEATERS
Here are some useful tips on keeping your water heater running smoothly between the annual maintenance by the professional technician.

If you have a gas or electric water heater, keep the temperature dial setting at or below the suggested Factory Energy Savings Settings.

As your own contribution to sustainability, you can keep your water bills low by planning your use of hot water. Do not let your hot water faucet run – you will love the savings!

  • WHERE and HOW to SHUT OFF WATER

In case of an emergency, each household member should know where the shut-off valve is.

Adams Plumbing staff is glad to offer you a valve- identifying tags – just ask for one at the end of your service call!

You also want to know the location of the most important valve in the house – the main shut-off valve for the entire plumbing system. This valve is typically located on the house side by the water meter.

    ODORS in the PLUMBING SYSTEM

The well-designed and correctly installed plumbing system is odorless. Odors are caused by leaks in the waste, incorrectly installed vent piping, or from traps that have lost their water seal.

Unusual odors sometimes indicate the presence of a sewer gas –  while not always deadly, sewer gas is noxious.

The odorous smells in the piping require professional assessment and service. Call Adams Plumbing and Heating for a professional, honest, and thorough service of your plumbing installations.

  • FROZEN PIPES
Never use a blow torch to unfreeze frozen pipes!

It is far safer to adopt a more conservative procedure of melting ice by the use of a blow dryer, or heat gun.

  • PREVENTING FROZEN PIPES

Before the cold freezing weather sets in, make sure that all the garden hoses outside your home are disconnected – that way, hose and hose bib will not freeze and become damaged.

If you have an anti-freeze hydrant, you want to make sure the hose is disconnected – this will, in turn, make your faucet freeze-proof by allowing it to properly drain.

During freezing weather, always insulate water pipes exposed to the elements.

When pipes are laid underground they should be below the frost line to prevent freezing.
